Breeds.
A breed may be defined as a group of animals related by descent and developed for a special function. Thus, dairy cattle breeds are breeds developed primarily for milk production. In the United States, cattle kept primarily production belong to the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein аnd Jersey breeds. In addition, two dual-purpose breeds, the Milking Shorthorn and Red Polled are kept for milk, but their numbers are small in comparison with the mentioned dairy breeds.
Cattle were kept for dairy purposes long before the modern breeds developed. For example, in Holland butter production from cow’s milk became so important that specialized buildings «butter houses» were constructed for butter storage distribution before 1288. In the eighteenth century Bakewell was one of the to apply modern methods to the improvement of animals. Laws prohibiting the importation of cattle to the islands of Guernsey and Jersey probably were in the formation of these two breeds as we know them today, because these laws prevented crossing of the island cattle with others so that the uniformity of the cattle on each island was maintained.
Red Steppe breed was originated in the Ukraine through the mixture of German Angler with the indigenous Grey Steppe cattle. The Angler was brought in near the beginning of the 19th century because of its milking ability. Angler bulls continue to be imported from Germany and 200 heads have been purchased in 1965-67. The breed is a dairy type.
Red Steppe is a large animal, a solid, rather dark red in color.In a good herd on a state farm, many cows will reach 1,200 pounds’ and among the bull studs a 2,000 pound animal is not exceptional.
