An American in Japan

As you known the Japanese are very polite people. Here is a story about an American who was travelling in Japan.

One day he stayed at the hotel for the night. He wanted to get up very early the next morning as he had some very important work to do. That was why he ordered a Japanese who worked at the hotel to wake him up at six o’clock/

“Don’t forget, please”, he said.

At six o’clock the Japanese came into the American’s room and saw that he was still fast asleep. The Japanese was too polite to wake him up, so he took a sheet of paper and wrote a few words on it. He left the note on the telephone table and went out of the room.

The American woke up at 11 o’clock, looked at the clock on the wall and then saw the note on the table. He was very angry when he read: “Dear sir, it is six o’clock now. Please get up at once”.

A clever boy

One day a boy who was cleaning shoes in the street saw a young man and said:

“Let me clran your shoes for you”

“No,” the young man answered, “I don’t want you to clean my shoes”.

«I don’t ask much money for my work,” said the boy. “I clean shoes very well”.

“No,” the young man said.

“But I want to clean your shoes,” said the boy. “Don’t give me any money for my work. I’m going to clean them for nothing.”

“All right,” said the young man, “clean my shoes.”

The boy began to clean one of the young man ‘s shoes. Soon it was shining brightly. Then the boy stopped cleaning and refused to clean the other shoe.

“you must give me some money for my work if you want me to clean the other shoe,” he said.

“No,” the young man refused and went away. But soon he understood that it is not good to be in the street with one shoe clean and the other shoe not clean. The people in the street looked at him and laughed. He went back to the boy , gave him the money and told him to clean other shoe. In a very short time his shoes shone brightly.

The British are a sport-loving nation. Cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis, squash, table tennis, badminton, canoeing and snooker were all invented in Britain. Cricket is very much the English game. A match can take five days – and end in a draw. A form of cricket was being played 250 years ago.
Football began as a contest between neighboring villages – with no limit to the number on each side, no fixe pitch and almost no rules. The Football Association drew up the rules of the modern game in 1863 and in 1888 12 clubs joined together to form the first Football League. England won the World Cup in 1966. Rugby and football became two separate sports when the rules laid down by the Football Association said that only the goalkeeper could handle the ball. Two kinds of rugby are played in Britain. Rugby Union is played by amateurs in teams of 15 in the south of England and in Wales (where it is the national sport). Rugby League is played by professionals in teams of 13 in the north of England.
Golf was probably invented in Holland, but has been played in Scotland for at least 400 years. At first, it was played with balls made of wood, then of leather stuffed with feathers. The first rules for tennis were drawn up by the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club when it held its first tournament in the London suburb of Wimbledon in 1877. Wimbledon is still the world’s most famous tennis event.

The Last Inch (by James Aldridge, adapted) It wasn’t easy for Ben, a pilot of forty-three, to find a flying job. That’s why it was a stroke of luck when he was offered a job by the Commercial Television Stock Company. They paid a thousand dollars for every five hundred feet of shark film. Ben used a light plane to get to a little desert island in the Red Sea where the water along the coast was always filled with good-sized sharks. Ben took his ten-year-old son Davy with him.
